Meet Mayeni
Mayeni is a Sierra Leonean-American director, photographer, and producer working across narrative, experimental, and fashion film/photography. Her work spans international and independent productions, with experience in development, on-set production, and post-production workflows.
Mayeni explores cross-cultural identity, isolation, Black femininity, intricate relationships, radical emotional honesty, and the cost of being seen. She uses jarring soundscapes, audacious visuals, and rich colors to energize and draw viewers inward.
She redefines strength by creating a space for the bemusing— the sensitive and the passionate, the complex and “too much.” Whether it’s through an observational character study or a self-recorded transformation for the camera, Mayeni dares to challenge perceptions and start conversations for those who are silenced by life’s messy nuances.
Caught between intimacy and distance, we linger in weighted silence without tidy resolutions. Her playful, imaginative, and inquisitive spirit builds a world that provokes authenticity and community through shared vulnerability.
In 2026, Mayeni was nominated by Indie Short Fest for Best Student Female Director.
